Tropa Macaca
Marfim

Ruby Red RR-09

LP
£12.99

"Hailing from small town Santo Tirso in northern Portugal, Tropa Macaca are the duo of Andre Abel/Si mio Superior and Ju-Undo/Joana da ConceiƔao. After a couple of splits with like-minded brethren Fish & Sheep and CAVEIRA, "Marfim" ("Ivory") is their first full-length album. Utilizing various electronics (keyboards, assorted rhythm generators, processing tools) and employing supremely fucked guitar voicings, theirs is an improvised music, of its own school & therefore of complete danger. While you can draw parallels between Tropa_s sound and kraut stuff from the 70s (some Schulze, Gottsching), its been informed by various other music of old and recent times (see Black Dice_s new sound forms, Wolf Eyes homemade noise communication, grime/dubstep, raw house stuff) to create its own breed of psychedelic logics that are cultured by improvisation's progresses. These three pieces possess a fluid, narrative line driven by pure abstract intuition. Short loops of beats and bass as well as keyboard phrases continually and slowly mutate in texture, harmony and rhythm, with the guitar inhabiting them, birthing some very particular intensifications of the feeling and form that live hidden in these jams. While the flow of it is trance-like, the way its drawn up is concerned mainly with forward motion, creation, integration, disintegration & destruction of itself, the hypnosis in this process its only constant element. Dark ritual psychosis existing inside the domain of the electronic and the outlandish, super intimate, totally on its own. Andre Abel has played in out-rock trio Dance Damage (R.I.P.) and has a keys/drums duo with Pedro Magina called Aquaparque. Joana da ConceiƔao has been developing a big body of work in visual arts (& is also responsible for the artwork on this record). Limited to 300 copies, "Marfim" has been pressed on white vinyl." - Pedro Gomes.

Sensacao Principio

“Sensacao Do Principio is the third release proper from Tropa Macaca and their first with an American label. Their previous efforts on Ruby Red and Qbico were magnificent (though hard to find) efforts of blotted, aural sci-fi codifications somewhere between Anar Band and Blues Control. The two-track full-length continues their foray into post-psychedelic instrumental morphine, where Moolah's LP and Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" function as templates for the greater good. In other words, you gotta hear if for yourself.” – Tom Lax.
