Finn’s recent return to live work and recording has seen his wildly idiosyncratic vision barely dimmed, but Pass The Distance remains his crowning achievement, an ecstatic/apocalyptic vision of the other side channelled via zoned vocals, guitar, recorder, organ, harmonium, mandolin, flute, accordion and violin with the help of Finn’s then-shadow David Toop. Features the epic “Jerusalem” and a bunch of bonus/unreleased tracks as well as liners from both Finn and Toop. Highly recommended. |

Accidental Life 10to1 Records TTO-002 CD £8.99 Brand new album, his second 'post re-discovery', from Simon Finn whose 1970 album, Pass The Distance remains a classic of personally revelatory avant-folk. This new album features Simon on acoustic guitar and vocals joined by original collaborator David Toop alongside Karl Blake (Lemon Kittens/Shock Headed Peters et al), Joolie Wood (Current 93), Kith Godman, Tony Uter, Danielle Dax, Nidge Ince and Rose McDowell. The atmosphere is still focussed around the whole Leonard Cohen/Roy Harper/Syd Barrett loose singer/songwriter style and his delivery is bible black, with bleak, hypnotic lyrics combining with children's nursery rhymes, hallucinatory soundscapes and cracked, impassioned ballads. Finn has never made a bad record and this is another beauty. |
