Justen O’Brien & Jake
Time Will Tell
Guerssen Guess-067
LP
£21.99
Advance word on this weirdo private press side was pushing alla the right buttons at VT: vocals that came out of the post-Morrison school of DR Hooker, Fraction and White Heaven, massively drugged cocaine and candyfloss lounge vibes ala Jade Stone & Luv’s Mosaics: Pieces Of Stone masterpiece, a weirdly out-of-time 70s/80s production that sat somewhere this side of Bobb Trimble’s sainted LPs… and whadda you know? The comparisons are spot on, paying out on the above fantasy in droves. Time Will Tell came out of Dakota in 1978, privately released by O’Brien himself. The album has an obsessive/crackpot Ufology/cosmic theme, with lyrics about leaving the planet and galactic existential dread relayed by dark, oracular, Morrison-on-ludes vocals and sleazy acid-lounge arrangements. DR Hooker’s ecstatic Christian rock LP The Truth is probably the closest comparison but there’s something in the complexity of the arrangements and oddball feel (the album reportedly took two years to write and record) that locates it in a universe all its own. If you’re into eschatological psych with a creepy early-am neon burnout feel and you’re pretty much addicted to Acid Archives then this is the perfect trip. Guerssen have done a great job restoring it, with the classy cover as originally intended, a gatefold sleeve, detailed liners from Douglas McGowan of Yoga Records and never before seen pics: '”The total effect is like driving around in late- night Minneapolis looking for some action but instead ending up alone in an airport hotel lounge; a desolate 2 drink minimum neon light trip of creeping originality.'' - Patrick Lundborg, The Acid Archives. Highly recommended.
