1. 'Imperial' by William T. Vollmann
It feels a bit weird listing this as #1 since I haven't finished it yet, but it's going to take me some time to get through all 1200 pages of this, and already I'm so blown away by it that I'm sure it deserves its place. Vollmann somehow manages to keep topping himself, propelling his own craft forward and redefining the act of 'writing' as we know it (while advancing scholarship in some weird way, too). This is the real literary event of the year, and it was somewhat under the radar because a) the book cost $55, b) it was nonfiction, c) it came out the same week as Pynchon's new (fun, but somewhat throwaway) novel, and d) all the Bolaño hype this year.
2. T.A.S.K. 'Relaxing Time is Over'
I have no idea why I love this record but it clicked with me; it's an aesthetic that's completely alien to my usual interests but there was something brilliant and compelling about it anyway.
3. 'In The Loop' and the new season of 'The Thick of It' (Armando Iannucci)
'The Thick of It' perfectly captures the zeitgeist of my years living in the UK in addition to being hilarious. 'In the Loop' melds comedy with tragedy and somehow captures the zeitgeist of the miserable decade we (Americans too!) just endured. There's no point in being absurd with your fiction when reality is already absurd; instead, they choose wit and precision -- it's masterful.
4. Justin Liebermann & C. Spencer Yeh 'Object Lessons' (Dronedisco)
I'm long on-record as a Spencer Yeh fan but this album came out of left field, even for an artist who continually surprises me. It's a beautiful object as well; art that is total in its vision.
5. Dead @ 24 'Blast off, Motherfucker!' (Ride the Snake)
When I first started going to indie/noise/experimental/whatever shows as a high school senior, I saw Dead @ 24 many many times. I was too young and afraid to know what to make of them then; they were always the opening band that I never quite understood. They broke up when I was 18 and I spent the last decade thinking, retroactively, how brilliant and inspiring they were. Maybe it's they who made me 'weird'. That their recordings have been made available on vinyl is a real achievement, a labour of love for the label and the few fans who are still resonating in their wake.
6. MoKS AVAMAA 2009 Art Symposium (Mooste, Estonia)
I don't know if it's okay to list an event, but the week I spent in rural Estonia helped me to re-open lethargic eyes and think about ways to live everyday life in a creative context. John Grznich's MUTOPIA workshop was the ultimate example of the journey transcending the destination; it led me through ideas about action, space and place while also experimenting with text, sound and video. I'll be there next year for sure.
7. Hollis Frampton 'On the Camera and Consecutive Matters: the Writing of Hollis Frampton'
I'm pretty excited that Hollis Frampton's classic book 'Circles of Confusion' is now available again, and expanded to include additional material. It's been over ten years since I saw my first Frampton film ('Less') and I'm still trying to properly comprehend his work. These writings take his brilliant, analytical approach to images and structure and put them in a format that's easy to engage with. I can page through this at any point and pull out a few ideas to inspire me, even if I'm working on a non-visual sound piece (or just making dinner).
8. Shadow Ring 'Life Review' (Kye)
The Shadow Ring were the "last" band that changed my life, some years ago now; since then I'm either jaded or just nothing has compared but their impact on me was momentous. This pleasantly-packaged 2xCD pulls together a lot of sources together into something digestible.
9. Dan Graham 'Rock/Music Writings'
I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this as I was skeptical of Graham's ideas about rock music. I loved his early, more disjointed pieces about the Kinks and whatnot; it balances well with the later writings on new wave and the sexual exploitation of Bow Wow Wow. Being an 'artist' and not just a 'writer' gives him some leeway that he exploits with glee.
10. Robert Bolaño '2666'
I hate including something that's going to be on every other "top 10 books of 2009" list, but, fuck, '2666' really is worth every bit of the hype. And moreso. The 3-volume paperback is a wonderful way to read this because it isolates the long, occasionally excruciating fourth section into its own book; it's a horrifying yet spellbinding trip through a very very dark place that deserves its own endpapers. And overall, the novel manages to hit on the 'big' themes of all great novels of the 20th century but somehow bucks the trends of the same time.
