Samara Lubelski
Spectacular Of Passages
The Social Registry TSR-022
CD
£11.99
Brand new collection of song-based material from Samara Lubelski (Tower Recordings et al), a follow-up to last year’s Fleeting Skies on De Stijl that takes the French pop underground feel of that particular landmark into new zones of electrified post-Byrds comedown. A virtual big-band line-up on this one too, including appearances by Tim Barnes, Hamish Kilgour (of NZ’s The Clean), Matt Heyner (NNCK) and Helena Espvall (Espers). Recommended.

Gang Gang Dance
God’s Money
The Social Registry TSR-019
CD
£12.99
Brand new album from this NY-based avant/pop collective with connections to Angelblood/NNCK. While not quite as dilated as their earlier work there are some nice moves here, with an electro/acoustic rhythm section that sounds like a programmed orchestra of Mani Neumeiers driving weird psychedelic dub forms through hallucinogenic environs of rock-based electronica and F/X soaked guitar. Gotta dig the occasional audacious moments of symphonic prog/pomp too (one part sounds like fuggin’ Necronomicon) – I mean, who would’ve dared? Vocalist Liz also sounds a hell of a lot like Kate Bush these days and that’s no bad thing round these parts, especially when she’s left alone to hover over deep pools of black synthesized space that might’ve been scored by Florian Fricke. So, I guess it’s a concept album and, yeah, I guess I’m into it.

Gorgeous CD version of the brand new album from the trio of Samara Lubelski, Theo Angell and Dan Brown. A beautiful collection of forlorn avant pop songs and serrated throat-float.
