Massive historical unearthing here: you probably (if yr a VT regular at least) know Onna from their excellent PSF disc of a year or so ago. Briefly, they were/are the musical project of one Keizo Miyanishi, a celebrated manga artists and notorious underground head. At one point in the early 80s Onna was actually a twin-guitar duo featuring Miyanishi and Michio Kurihara (White Heaven/Ghost et al) but recently the group has taken on a heavier avant/sound art/minimal drone aspect, moving away from the extended twelve string violence of before. But this staggering single, restored by the Holy Mountain label, is a whole other bagful of boo, two sides of massively potent early Japanese psych guitar oblivion, with Miyanishsi trading epic six string exchanges with partner Mafuyu Hiroki. The sound is super crude and beautifully psychedelic. There's a cheap drum machine that gives it an almost French Illitch/Ruth-styled cyborg new wave feel but the lead guitar, not to say the lazy smoking-on-the-moon vocals and the beautiful arcs of repeating melody are straight out of the Mizutani/Les Rallizes Denudes school of satori=now. Been spinning this one non-stop since we scored it. A stunning single, easily one of the major Japanese releases of the year and hopefully the first of many historical missives from a massively important - if comparatively undocumented - Japanese cell. Highly recommended.
