OUT OF STOCK!

So much contemporary garage rock seems like pastiche, mere camp, smartass rock/roll so self-conscious in its styling that even getting gone feels more like ‘getting gone’. The whole genre seems like bad panto. Then something like this comes out of nowhere and reconnects your brain to your ass. Meercaz is a punk primitive psych rock group out of Portland, Oregon led and masterminded by Mr Muslim Delgado. Their credo is drawn from street-walking cheetah era Stooges, the urban wasteland style of George Brigman, the apocalyptic electro fury of the first Chrome LP and the 70s Cleveland underground and an overall Spacemen 3 plays the first Pebbles vibe. You know how Skullflower always talked about how Hawkwind were their primary influence but it never really made sense cuz they were more about vertical stratas of tone on tone than blues-based rock/roll? Meercaz play early Skullflower’s vision of a pro-punk Hawkwind with that missing cosmo-blues backbone, worrying single riffs into endless loops of Blue Cheer-styled curdled air then blasting into the kind of basement ramalama that would marry Rob Tyner and Mike Rep. Its been a while since something with such deep roots in the garage exploded into the future with the force of vision and unselfconscious belief of Meercaz. The whole deal comes with tip-on sleeves and some classic Bangs-styled notes from Mr Eddie Flowers. Sez Ed: “The Meercaz sound is hard to pin down, which is pretty bitchen considering the fact that it's shameless ROCK! The production is simple yet experimental. The approach is primitive but spacey, simultaneously "retro" and "futuristic" without batting an eye. It's aggressive guitar music that's "punk" in its DIY manic quality, but with an aesthetic that's much closer to the late 60s and early 70s. To my ears, Meercaz is one of the handful of things in recent years that matches what I think modern rock music SHOULD sound like (and rarely does).” I ain’t gonna argue. Highly recommended.
