Beautiful vinyl reissue of this classic of sociopathic/misanthropic heavy metal minimalism from Brainbombs. Originally issued by Releasing Eskimo in 1995 (part of a fantastic label run that also included Merzbow’s classic Noisembryo) Obey takes the ethos of Right To Kill-era Whitehouse and marries it to post-Stooges two-chord boogie played fast and loose. The vocals have a surreal Euro/gonzo aspect that could almost be Dennis Tyfus, which makes the subject matter – domination, violence, sex, nihilism – even more confusing and surreal. Their use of completely out of tune brass is supremely effective, conjuring psychedelic balloon tones that sound like Cosey Fanni Tutti plays Funhouse. But it’s the atmosphere of total obsession, the monomania of the riffs and the psychotic subject matter, that gives the music its compulsive power. A classic album from one of the weirdest European underground groups. Highly recommended.
