Unlike most of its ilk, The Acid Archives has a wide enough remit to go well beyond the blinkered/narrow fatso record collector interpretation of canonical psych foo and openly embraces avant garde/communal drone/trance groups like Gravity Adjusters Expansion Band, 'real people' records like Kenneth Higney's Attic Demonstration and Little Howlin' Wolf and wild avant garde sides like Iowa Ear Music as well as classics like The Elevators, The Bachs, Index, Cold Sun, Fraction et al. As such it functions as an essential reference guide to alla the various under-the-radar outsider music of the glory years of 20th century rock, with listings from 1965 through 1982. Also a bunch of idiotically entertaining top 10s, critic's favourites, dealer phrases 'explained', holy cows shot to ribbons, rarity and value ratings, buying guide etc. This second edition is even heavier and has full-colour sleeve and label repros throughout as well as a bunch of new essays on under-the-radar genres like Exotica, Underground Soul & Funk, Tax Scam Rock, Lounge Records, Southern Rock, Custom Label Rock and New Age Music. Large format, doorstop thick, that's my weekend taken care of. Highly recommended!
